A total of 575 police officers in the Free State were promoted to senior positions by the provincial police management.

The deserving candidates paraded at a ceremony held on Wednesday, 27 February, at the Dr Rantlai Molemela Stadium.

A total of 555 officers were promoted from constable to sergeant and 20 sergeants were promoted to warrant officers. The event saw 1 450 warrant officers promoted to senior rank as warrant officer in line with the grade progression of the police.

These officers were promoted to senior positions on merit and after they were deemed to have met the requirements of the police service.

MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini said: “It is not an easy job to be a police officer, because of the nature of the work. You are going to work, not sure that you will return to your family. To be a police officer is not a normal job, but a calling. Police deal with criminal and non-criminal complaints outside, gender-based violence and drug abuse,” said Mashinini.

Mashinini also presented medals of long service to officers for service that spans from 20, 30 and 40 years, respectively. Recipients of the 40-years medal were capt. Kitty Taljaard and W/O George Reid. The pair joined the police in 1979.

Mashinini congratulated the medal recipients and saluted them for their hard to work.
