The Free State police have assured the public that security will be tight during the elections on 8 May.

Brig. Motantsi Makhele, provincial police spokesperson, said the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Joints) stakeholders will tighten their grip and embark on an intensive programme and deploy members to ensure the safety and security of the people of the Free State.

He said the police forces are ready and will intensify operations to clamp down on criminals and maintain the zero-tolerance approach.

“The operational plans are already compiled and were operating as early as May 2018 during the registration period and will continue until the end of May 2019. Our forces will be deployed throughout all 110 police stations to police the elections both static and mobile in 1 529 polling stations. We are appealing to people to responsibly execute their democratic right and in an orderly manner,” said Makhele.

He said in the multi-disciplinary collaboration, all stakeholders partnering with other law enforcement agencies, including the Electoral Commission (IEC), aimed at maintaining law and order during the upcoming general elections.

“Intensive foot and vehicle patrols will be conducted prior, during and after the elections in high density areas as well as hot spots which were dominated by disruptive actions.

“These patrols will mainly focus on the prevention of election related crimes like unlawful defacing of political party’s posters and incidents of intimidation,” said Makhele.
