Posters of political parties that contested the elections on 8 May are still visible on lamp posts, walls of subway bridges and buildings within the municipal area of the Mangaung Metro.

Some posters are gradually fading in the blistering sun, although the city council’s deadline for parties to remove the posters has lapsed.

On 14 May the council issued a notice alerting parties, including the Electoral Commission of South Africa, to remove their posters within the jurisdiction of the Mangaung Metro.

Parties were given 14 days after the date of elections to remove their posters, on which they spent millions of rands to lure voters ahead of the sixth democratic elections.

Adding to the colourful scene the posters presents, are creative paintings on the walls of subway bridges with the date 8 May, when voters cast their votes.

The Mangaung city council sternly warned that a penalty of R252 per poster would be imposed on all parties failing to remove their posters by the specified date.

“In line with the city’s Outdoor Advertising Bylaw, Schedule 11, Section 12, all posters within the jurisdiction of Mangaung must be removed 14 days after the date of elections on 8 May 2019,” Qondile Khedama, spokesperson of the Mangaung Metro, said in the statement of 14 May.

Khedama furthermore explained that the city council had resolved in a meeting on 4 December 2018 on the penalties to be paid if it was left to the municipality to remove the offending posters.
