Primary schools in the Free State are encouraged to register u.12 boys football teams for this year’s Danone Nations Cup soccer tournament before or on the closing date of 12 March.

The registration cutoff for primary schools across the country has been extended to March.

This is to enable more schools to register for the prestigious primary school competition, which offers a once-in-lifetime opportunity to compete internationally.

Schools such as the Brebner Primary School from Bloemfontein, the Phaphama Primary School from Fouriesburg and the Nelson Mandela Primary School from Sasolburg have already registered for the competition.

The registration will follow knockout games that will be played in March.

The provincial final will feature five district winners and will take place in April.

The winner will then compete nationally.

One of the largest soccer tournaments in the world, the Danone Nations Cup is focused on boys aged ten to 12.

This year will mark the 19th edition of the football development tournament.

South Africa has been participating in this international championship since its inception and has won the world title in 2003, 2007 and 2009.

The tournament is run in partnership with the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa).

The national team that comes out on top will represent the country at the Danone Nations Cup World Finals.

Last year, over 2 700 schools registered to play in the initial rounds of the tournament – the most to have registered in the history of the tournament in this country.

Schools can register for the competition by calling the national coordinator of Sasfa, Themba Tshabalala, on 011-403-2844, 084-290-0602 or 072-588-4957.
