Prison time for toy gun robbery

2016-02-10 06:00

TWO suspects were sentenced to eight years by the Wepener Regional Court on Thursday (04/02) for robbing a shop with a toy gun and slashing a 21-year-old shopkeeper with a panga in June 2015.

The two accused, Chobokoane Lehlohonolo (20) and Ramapulane Thapelo (21), were found guilty of pointing a firearm and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

According to Sgt. Yanga Ngcukana, police spokesperson, the incident took place on 23 June 2015.

The duo entered the shop and pointed the “firearm” at the shopkeeper’s head.

However, the victim managed to grab the gunman’s hand and the gun fell to the floor.

The second accused pulled out a panga and slashed the victim across his shoulders.

The robbers fled the scene on foot with R800.

The two were arrested by an off-duty police officer together with the community just 30 minutes after they had committed the crime.

The money, the toy gun and the panga that were used in the crime were confiscated.

Capt. Justice Pitso applauded the police member for being alert and on duty 24/7.

“The success of this case is the result of good working relations between the community and the police,” Pitso added.
