THE University of the Free State (UFS) is on track with the search for a new a vice-chancellor and rector to replace Prof. Jonathan Jansen.
Jansen announced in May that he would step down at the end of August after accepting a fellowship at the Centre for Advanced Studies in Behavioural Sciences at the Stanford University in America. He has been in the position since 2009.
“The process for the council of the University of the Free State to appoint a vice-chancellor and rector through a national and international search commenced after Prof. Jonathan Jansen announced that he would be stepping down. Further information, including detail about applicants, cannot be divulged at this stage, as it is an internal process,” stated Lacea Loader, director of communication.
Loader would neither deny nor confirm that Prof. Thandwa Mthembu, vice-chancellor and principal at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, was among the applicants. The CUT has announced that Mthembu will step down at the end of September – a month after Jansen.
