A meeting was held on Tuesday, 16 April, to inform parents of children with special needs about the opportunities that a new special skills development programme will offer their children after school.

Petronella Swarts, an entrepreneur who is passionate about giving opportunities to young adults with special needs, registered the Amogelang Programme as a non-profit organisation in October last year.

She said it is very sad that learners of schools such as Dr Bohmer, Lettie Fouché and Martie du Plessis cannot find programmes to hone their skills and afford them job opportunities.

Swarts is working with different state departments to get specialists to train learners in a variety of skills.

When everything is in place, Amogelang will provide a one-year skills development and training course in sewing, arts and culture, sports, agriculture, beauty, hospitality, cooking, welding, bead work, computer literacy and upholstery. She says Amogelang will help students to find suitable job opportunities.

With the help of her daughter, Lo-Ann, Swarts hopes to one day introduce the programme to other parts of the Free State.

Call Swarts on 072-017-2296.
