Province fights abuse

2018-06-06 06:00

The Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison is calling on the community to stand up against any form of abuse.

This follows the spate of attacks against women and children, which, according to the department, needs to raise the alarm that more needs to be done to report these cases and provide support for those facing abuse.

In a statement by Keitumetse Moticoe, departmental spokesperson, the concern about violence and abuse against vulnerable members of society continues.

“Too many incidents of abuse and abuse related deaths are being reported and we need to end this in our communities.

“We cannot do it alone, we need everyone to take a stand,” she stated.

She emphasised the department’s continuous efforts to raise awareness on the negative impact violence and abuse has on vulnerable groups in society. The campaigns will be through their Domestic Violence Awareness programmes and other campaigns.

“We maintain our strong stance against any form of violence and abuse in our communities.”

She highlighted how most cases of violence and abuse happen behind closed doors while some are known in communities. The statement condemns those who turn a blind eye and say “we don’t want to get involved.”

“We need to get involved and expose perpetrators and report abuse,” the department urges.

“It is not normal to read of women and children being abused or killed.

“Staying in an abusive relationship or environment for the sake of children or for security is not an excuse because we will be failing to protect ourselves and our children.”

Members of the community are urged to report abuse cases to the police, social workers and organisations helping victims of abuse.

Where a case has been reported to the police and no assistance has been availed, it should be reported to the station commander or the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison’s Civilian Oversight Directorate on 053-839-1700.
