Building an efficient economy, using resources effectively, initiating development-orientated public administration and providing impartial, fair and equitable services.

These are but a few of the constitutional values and principles mandated by the Public Service Commission by the constitutionamongst others (PSC) to govern public administration as set out in section 195 of the Constitution.

The PSC’s provincial launch of these constitutional values and principles took place in the Sol Plaatje University’s library auditorium on 14 September.

The launch was attended by dignitaries of governmental departments, the premier of the Northern Cape, the deputy vice-chancellor of the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) and the vice-chancellor and principal of the SPU.

Members of the legislature, MEC’s, representatives of chapter nine institutions and public servants also attended the event.

The aim was to make public servants aware of the constitutional values and principles that should guide their work, and to inspire them to improve their performance and be aware of the link between their actions, attitudes and values.

At the launch, Premier Sylvia Lucas delivered a keynote address on building a value-driven public service through ethical leadership for service delivery.

Lucas urged dignitaries to work together to stimulate that the spirit of Thuma Mina grows into an unstoppable social movement for change.

She said a renewed mood of optimism and hope will create an opportunity to build a better and more inclusive tomorrow.

“I am proud to proclaim that I will – at all times – be led by the values and sterling example set by Tata Nelson Mandela and Mamma Albertina Sisulu. I, as a servant of the people, will to the best of my ability and led by my conscience serve our people with diligence and dignity.

“I will give selflessly of myself in service to others and I will champion change, prosperity and development to the benefit of all our people. I solemnly proclaim that I will be the personification of Ubuntu and the living embodiment of a servant of the people. I challenge you to do the same.”

A memorandum of understanding between the PSC and the SPU was also signed with the intent of establishing a partnership between the two institutions to share expertise and research facilities.

The role of the PSC in this partnership is to inculcate the commission’s values and principles to the management science programmes offered by the university.

The aim is that both parties will produce graduates who, when entering the public service sector, will become servants who work with the interest of the public at heart.
