QWAQWA. – The Qwaqwa community radio station, Qwaqwa Radio, has kicked off its special outside broadcast political debate for the upcoming municipal election that is to be held on 3 August.

The station hosted its first political debate on Tuesday, 14 June, at the Tshiya Resource centre in Phuthaditjhaba, Qwaqwa. They hosted 11 political parties.

According to Makutlwano Mahamuza, the station’s head of news, they will host 11 special outside broadcast political debates before the election date, in various areas across the district. Mahamuza said most of their shows would be broadcast in the evening to accommodate those who work during the day.

She added that they had also extended the duration of their one-hour current affairs shows by an hour to give residents enough time to put questions to political parties.

“We’re going to have our last broadcast 48 hours before the election date, in accordance with ICASA’s requirements regarding political debates.”

Mahamuza said the aim of the debates was to bring political parties to the voters themselves, so that voters could ask them questions.

“Our debates are different from other media houses, as we give most of the opportunity to put questions to parties to the residents, rather than to our presenter,” she said.

Expectations are that the station will visit different wards and only registered party candidates will represent the parties during ward election debates, including independent candidates.
