The price of red meat will not necessarily be lowered after the positive impact of the good rain.

The contrary seems to be possible.

Farmers had to thin out their livestock to such a degree that they are currently in a build-up phase.

This means that less cattle will be slaughtered and that prices can rise.

“It can take up to three years to build up a herd and during this period the local meat supply will be less than usual,” says Hamlet Hlomendlini of Agri SA.

“It may even be necessary to import red meat to satisfy the local demand. This unfortunately means that red meat prices will rise considerably in 2017.”
