The police welcome the sentencing that was handed down to Marvin Matthews (31) in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 29 November.

He was found guilty of two separate rape cases for which he received 10 and 20 years’ imprisonment.

At the time of the sentence, Matthews stood trial for an attempted rape in February 2012, but was only found
guilty of assault with the
intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was sentenced a further three years for stabbing a female victim with a knife.

Matthews is known to his victims, who are all 28 to 32 years old.

He raped the two women at houses in Kimberley on two separate occasions in December 2011 and December 2012.

The sentences will run concurrently, so Matthews will serve an effective 20 years imprisonment.

The acting Frances Baard cluster commander, Brig. Tip Brink, lauds Det. Sgt David Tau for a job well done.

“The police are focused on our mandate and see crimes against women and children as one of our priorities, especially during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign,” stated Brink.
