A 28-year-old man received 20 years’ imprisonment after he had been found guilty of rape.

Buti Thonkonyane was sentenced in the court in Kathu on Thursday, 22 November, and received 15 years’ imprisonment for each of the three rape cases and an added five years for the robbery of a cell phone of one of his victims.

Thonkonyane received 20 years’ imprisonment in total, as the sentences will be running concurrently.

According to Capt. Sergio Kock, police spokesperson, Thonkonyane accosted all his victims in the veld in Dithakong Village, threatened them with a knife and raped them.

The first incident happened in March 2016, the second in September 2017 and the third in November 2017.

“The victims were aged 16, 17, and 19 years respectively.

“The police searched for the accused and traced him by means of his DNA and the modus operandi he utilised. Thonkonyane was arrested on 23 March 2018 and sentenced on 22 November for these heinous crimes,” Kock said.

Maj. Gen. Koliswa, deputy provincial police commissioner for crime detection of the Northern Cape, lauded Const. Freddie Moamogwa of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (FCS-SECI) for “a brilliant job done”.

“It is with pride that we see our members working extremely hard to remove criminals from our streets. The convictions result in justice for the victims concerned and the community feel safer when the perpetrators are incarcerated.

“It also sends out a stern message that when you do crime, you will do the time, especially as we are doing the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children campaign.”
