Rapist gets life sentence

A Botshabelo man found guilty of raping his neighbour, an elderly woman, has received a hefty sentence of life imprisonment.

Teboho William Sehau (31) was convicted and sentenced in the Botshabelo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 15 May,for raping the victim, a 74-year-old woman in Section A, Botshabelo.

Sgt Martin Xuma, Botshabelo cluster police spokesperson, said evidence, which included DNA results, had positively linked the accused to the crime.

He said in addition, samples taken from a hat found at the crime scene also linked the accused to the crime.

“The hat was found in the room where the rape took place,” he said.

Xuma said evidence by a witness, a 24-year-old grandson of the granny, was found to be credible during the trial.

He said the grandson was a key witness as he caught the accused pants down, in the act of raping the granny in one of the bedrooms.

The incident reportedly happened last year on 2 July at about 15:49. Xuma said the grandson got worried when he did not see his grandmother sitting outside at the usual spot.

“The grandson got into the house and called for his grandmother. As he got into one of the bedrooms he found his neighbour Sehau naked and raping his grandmother. The grandson forcefully removed the accused and alerted the neighbours. The police were summoned to the scene and apprehended the accused for rape,” said Xuma.
