Shawn Rooi (25) from Prieska received life imprisonment on Wednesday (04/07).

Rooi was sentenced to an additional 27 years, after being found guilty of three counts of rape, two counts of house breaking with the intent to rape and one charge of obstructing a police officer from performing his duties.

The sentence was passed in the Northern Cape High Court, ruling that all sentences will run concurrently.

In April 2017 Rooi broke into a premise in Prieska Plakkerskamp and raped a 55-year-old woman.

The following day Rooi broke into another premise and raped a 40-year-old woman, with the same modus operandi.

According to police spokesperson, Capt. Sergio Kock, Rooi was arrested in April 2017, but was released as both charges were temporarily withdrawn from the court role. In November 2017, Rooi raped his third victim, a ten-year-old girl. He was arrested and kept in custody.

Pixley ka Seme cluster commander, Brig. Nomahlube Sofika, lauded Det. Const. Denzil Swarts of the police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for a brilliant job done.
