The Botshabelo Regional Court has sentenced Tshepo Mbolekwa (26) to life imprisonment for raping a five-year-old girl in December last year.

He was sentenced on 24 May after being convicted of raping the minor on 2 December at about 15:00 in section H3, Botshabelo.

Sgt. Martin Xuma, police spokesperson in Botshabelo, said Mbolekwa remained in custody until sentencing.

He said the victim’s older sister caught him off guard in a shack with the crying girl.

“The witness found her sister half naked and Mbolekwa in the process of putting on his trousers. The older sister was looking for the child after being informed that she had left with Mbolekwa,” Xuma said.

The rapist found the girl playing in the yard with her five-year-old cousin in Section G. He asked them for peaches, and the victim gave him some.

“He then lured her away, promising to buy her sweets in appreciation for giving him peaches,” said Xuma. He said the act ended with rape of the child.

According to Xuma, the cousin wanted to go along, but Mbolekwa ordered her to stay behind.

“He took the victim to the shop. Upon arrival, he told the girl that he had left his money at home and that she must come along to collect it.”
