A rapist released on parole has been returned to prison to serve a life term after the Free State High Court sentenced him for raping two teenage girls in 2018. Simphiwe Jacob Mnguni (36) from Deneysville got life imprisonment for raping a 15-year-old girl and 15 years for raping a 17-year-old. He was sentenced at the High Court sitting in Sasolburg on Wednesday, 23 October. Mnguni had been released on parole after serving part of a 20-year term for rape in 2007. He was found guilty on two counts of rape and sexual assault at different places in August last year.Judge Martha Mbhele threw the book at Mnguni imposing a lengthy sentence. He was handed an additional five years for sexual assault.Phaladi Shuping, Free State spokesperson of the provincial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said DNA linked the accused to the rape cases. According to evidence presented in court, Mnguni raped the 15-year-old girl at knifepoint on 18 August while the 17-year-old was raped on 22 August. Both victims were going home on foot when they were accosted by Mnguni. The 15-year-old was dragged to the back of a local supermarket where she was raped. “A group of men heard her screams and rescued her,” said Shuping. He said the accused forced the 17-year-old to the graveside where he raped her.The court utterly rejected Mnguni’s defence that he had an affair with the victims and that sex was consensual.
