PHUTHADITJHABA. – The High Court in Harrismith found Mosiuwa Andries Mofokeng (27) of Tseseng Village in Qwaqwa guilty on six charges of rape and handed down five life sentences on these charges, which will run concurrently.

Mofokeng was accused of raping eight girls between the ages of 10 and 13 in Qwaqwa during separate incidents. He was arrested after these incidents when one of his victims saw him walking down the street and alerted the police.

According to Sgt Mmako Mophiring, the police spokesperson, both the Namahadi and Phuthaditjhaba police had cases of rape on their records which indicated the same modus operandi by the perpetrators.

“The investigating officer linked the suspect by means of DNA tests to the other victims and cases were opened that were brought to the High Court for trial, which started on 18 April,” he said.

The cases were investigated by Det. WO Matatasi Molefe of the Phuthaditjhaba Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

“I want to congratulate the Department of Justice, the police and the community for the wonderful work they had done in bringing the perpetrator to book. They have instilled faith in the families and friends of the victims that justice always prevails.

“I also want to thank our forensic laboratory team for helping to link the accused to the crimes. Rape is a humiliating, depressing, arrogant, brutal and an inhuman thing that shouldn’t be happening to any person.

“As a police service we are doing our level best to investigate these cases and to present them before the court of law. Therefore, I would like to thank and to bless all those who were directly and indirectly involved in finalizing the matter,” said the Free State provincial commissioner, Lt. Gen. Thebethe Mpembe.
