The Free State police have welcomed the conviction and sentencing to two times life imprisonment of Lehlohonolo Pitso (28) for two of four rape incidents.

The Bloemfontein High Court sentenced the accused on Thursday (14/09) after a trial hearing held from 4 to 14 September.

Brig. Motantsi Makhele, provincial police spokesperson, says the court also sentenced the accused to 25 years collectively on four counts of housebreaking and theft emanating from all four cases of rape.

He says the rape cases had been under investigation since 2012 following the rape of the victim, then 12 years old.

“In the first case, which took place in 2012, the suspect broke into a house and raped a 12 year old girl. In the second case (also in 2012), a 35 year old victim was raped. In the third case (2013), the suspect broke into a house and raped a 29 year old victim. In the fourth case (2014), the suspect once more broke into a house and raped a 22 year old victim,” says Makhele.

He says the crimes had been committed in Mangaung.

“All these cases were assigned to the investigating officer, WO Martinus Smit. He utilised all forensic aids at his disposal and in October 2016 the results thereof isolated and linked Lehlohonolo Pitso as a possible suspect in all these cases.”
