Rapists get 30 years

Justice has been served for two Botshabelo rape victims after the sentencing of their two rapists to 30 years in prison each.

The Botshabelo Regional Court sentenced Phehello Richard Marumo (25) and Teboho Lawrence Zola (23) on 16 November after finding them guilty on charges of housebreaking with the intent to rape.

This ordeal took place on 29 November 2015 at a house in Botshabelo’s Section L and the sentencing ends the 12 month wait for the victims to get justice.

Sgt Martin Xuma, Botshabelo police cluster spokesperson, said the successful conviction followed forensic DNA investigation which positively linked the accused.

He said evidence also included a mobile phone which Marumo had stolen from his 26-year-old victim during the rape ordeal.

Marumo and Zola reportedly went to the house looking for the male cousin of the two victims and forced entry into the house through a window at about 00:38.

Upon not finding the person they were looking for, the two men decided to rape the two women.

Zola raped his 24-year-old victim in an open veld while accompanying her to the outside toilet. Marumo raped his victim in a house.

The court heard evidence by the victims of their rape ordeal at knife-point by the two rapists.

The mobile phone which Marumo had stolen led to a breakthrough on the same day with the investigative officer, Const. Alfred Mofamere, arresting Marumo first and Zola the following month.

Xuma said Zola was apprehended the following month after being traced to an initiation school where he had been hiding. Zola was known by the two victims.
