  • A 31-year-old man of Philippolis, who was found guilty of raping a mentally challenged orphan, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Philippolis Regional Court.

The court recently sentenced the man, whose name was withheld to protect the victim, for raping a child on 15 September 2015.

The victim was seven years old at the time.

Sgt Sinah Mpakane, police spokesperson, said the sentencing followed the positive outcome of the investigation and the testimony of a credible witness, who caught the accused red-handed raping the victim in a shack.

She said the eyewitness peeped through a hole in the shack, which was locked at the time.

Mpakane said the victim’s father was called to the scene.

“The accused ran away. Members of the community gave chase and called the police. He was arrested the same day,” she said.

Mpakane said the accused evaded arrest and failed to comply with bail conditions to appear in court.

  • A Botshabelo man, Flap Mooi (27), was sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for raping a 24-year-old woman on 6 November last year.

The Botshabelo Regional Court recently sentenced him.

The accused had reportedly dragged the victim to his residence in Section L, Botshabelo. She had apparently been carrying her six month old daughter.

Sgt Martin Xuma, police spokesperson, said the victim was freed with the help of two friends, who had also alerted her mother.
