THE Northern Cape Provincial Legislature (NCPL) will stick to its promise to donate two brand new washing machines to the Sinothando Child and Youth Centre.

That comes after a team from the legislature, accompanied by the Chief Whip Patric Moopelwa, made a physical assessment at the centre and identified a dire need for washing machines.

“It came across that their industrial machine was broken and it was too costly to fix, which created a huge backlog with their washing,” explained Carmen Gopane, Manager: Public Education and Communication.

The NCPL elected to spend Mandela Day by cleaning the centre, which houses vulnerable children from disadvantaged communities.

“They cannot fend for themselves, especially when faced with issues of abuse, neglect, abandonment and illness.”

As part of its 67 minutes the team cleaned the centre, assisted in washing the children’s clothes and collected approximately R7 500 towards toiletries for the centre. Moopelwa, further gave an undertaking to the management of the Sinothando Child and Youth Centre that the NCLP would adopt the centre for a period of three years, as part of its social responsibility programme.

He also pledged that the the NCLP would assist and support the centre through a phased-out approach during the next three years.
