Rotten smell is no value for money

Moses Molelekwa, Bloemfontein:

Residents and businesses within the Mangaung Metro Municipality are exposed to health hazards due to inconsistent collection of waste by the city council.

Rate payers or non-payers – we are all exposed to serious health hazards in residential settlements within this ANC-led city council. Every corner of beautiful buildings of the once neat city that attracted tourists, is a mess.

Sadly, the ANC as the majority party in this city council is convinced all is well and want residents to believe their propaganda. It is a norm to the ANC and its councillors to make excuses.

Illegal dumping sites have been mushrooming on almost every corner. Even the Bram Fischer building, the city council headquarters where far-reaching decisions are taken, reflects a dumping site.

Shame on the ANC-led government.

I read in Express that the metro council speaker, Mxolisi Siyonzana, who holds a powerful position, owes the very same employer about R92 500 on his municipal account, while his salary is more than a million rand per year.

The irony is that he and his comrades, including Mayor Olly Mlamleli, are making noises about ordinary citizens’ defaulting payments.

According to the article, Siyonzana denied the amount and said it was less.

The question remains why he is in arrears, knowing it is wrong? Surely, Siyonzana is not the only culprit.

Can such people be trusted? According to me, and it is my strong view, they are wilfully deceiving citizens claiming this is quality service delivery.

I reside near a residential complex in Bloemanda, Bloemfontein. The unpleasant smell of uncollected waste coming from this complex, which is close to a church and the Motheo College campus, hurts me.

Often city council workers responsible to collect waste, drive past the complex without collecting it.

This happens even when the occupants of the complex have put the waste outside the premises near the gate to make it easy for collection.

During the festive season waste was laying for weeks at the gate outside the complex. Stray dogs then did what they do best – tear waste bags into pieces and beyond recognition in their search for food.

After speaking to one of the occupants and receiving an explanation about their predicament, I really sympathise with them and I blame the ANC-led council.

I am one of the residents affected by the non-collection of waste and the unpleasant smell of rotten waste from the complex.

As voters who want what is best, we should take a stand and vote right beyond the 2019 election.

We are not getting value for money as rates payers.
