BUDDING middle distance runner Lerato Lesia (14) is September’s winner of SuperSport Let’s Play Sport Star of the Month for Express.

The learner from Bloemfontein’s Lereko Secondary School has been chosen for excelling in cross-country, track and field competitions under the auspices of Athletics South Africa (ASA) and South African Schools Athletics (Sasa).

Achievements under Lerato’s belt for 2016 include obtaining first, second and third positions across meetings.

She has been awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.

In the Athletics Zone Bloemfontein track and field competition, she finished in second place in the 1 500 m and third in the 800 m.

In the inter-zone Motheo and Xhariep track and field meeting, Lerato came third in 1 500 m and fourth in the 800 m.

Her impressive run at ASA’s national track and field championship, held in Sasolburg, earned her a bronze medal in the 1 500 m and a silver in the 3 000 m.

At the zonal cross-country competition (4 km), she finished in second place in league 1 and 2 events, and in first position in league 4, 5 and 6 events of the inter-provincial cross-country event.

Lerato was the winner of the 4 km Motheo region cross-country and Free State cross-country championship, receiving gold.

Lerato ended in third place for girls’ u.14 at the national cross-country championship in September in George and on 1 October in Mpumalanga.

Lerato’s winning reputation has come a long way since when she was still attending the Atang Primary School in Bloemfontein. The year 2015 was no different, winning in a series of competitions.

In Sasa track and field events: Zone Motheo meeting: first in the 1 500 m and 800 m; Motheo and Xhariep track and field inter-zones final: gold medal in the 1 500 m, silver medal in the 800 m; Free State schools’ meeting track and field: silver medal in the 1 500 m, bronze medal in the 800 m; Sasa Free State track and field meeting: fifth in the 1 500 m and seventh in the 800 m (received recognition certificates) and at the Free State ASA meeting: bronze medal in both the 1 500 m and the 800 m.

In the cross-country championship leagues: first in league 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 zones in 3 km; inter-provincial league meeting: bronze medal in 3 km; Free State ASA cross-country: first in 3 km girls’ aged 13. Nationally, at ASA’s national cross-country event, she ended ninth in the 3 km girls’ aged 13 and received a bronze medal as top finisher in the Free State team in this age group.

Lerato’s motto is: “Winners never quit and quitters never win.”
