The Provincial Transport Forum (PTF) was officially launched by Lebogang Motlhaping, the MEC for the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison (DTSL), at the Desert Palace Casino in Upington on Wednesday (07/11).

The main objective of the PTF is to establish liaison structures between the province and planning authorities, working groups and coordinating committees.

The PTF comprises of representatives of the South African Local Government Association (Salga), the Department of Corporative, Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), district and local municipalities, the national and provincial DTSL and transport associations.

The PTF is expected to ensure that the national transport planning objectives and policies are implemented on provincial and municipal level.

In its commitment to sustained and supported transport sector development, the department promises to assume a monitoring and coordinating role and assists municipalities facing challenges regarding transport functions.

Motlhaping said an important element of the PTF is the promotion of transport as a key drive of economic and social development.

“We need to eliminate any form of violence in the industry by promoting unity and integration. Through regulation and sustained monitoring, we must eliminate unsafe and predatory business practices that may fuel conflict,” the MEC said.

“I appeal to all partners to abide by the rules of the road and to affirm road safety ideals. We can only achieve safer roads if we all take responsibility to raise awareness and instil responsible driving.”
