The Academy of Excellence School’s outstanding performance over the last few years can only be as a result of hard work by both learners and teachers. Our learners have constantly performed well over the last five years and our average pass rate has been in the high 90s. In 2016 we had our first 100% pass rate. This is no ordinary accomplishment, as all the Gr. 12 learners, none of who speak English at home, take English Home Language.and none of the learners are speaking English at home.English would be their second or even third preferred language. What makes it even more special, 59% of the 2019 matrics passed with a bachelor’s pass and can study at any university of their choice. This is how we do it: Hard work from day one Matric learners work hard from the first day of school and focus on subjects they struggle with. Struggling learners are identified during the first term, after which they are actively supported to improve and support is given to these learners. Teachers do their best to assist these learners with extra one-on-one lessons. We also ensure that learners are being taken care of emotionally and socially before and during the exam. In the past we have seen that learners who performed well in previous grades struggle with the stress of Gr. 12. We therefore have a registered child psychologist on the school premises, Miss Yvette Bester, who will assist learners if the need arises. We also involve parents and keep them informed about the learners. We communicate with them regularly and have an open-door policy. Parents play a vital role in assisting the learners at home. In the past we visited matrics at home to ensure that their place of study is properly set up and to determine if we can further assist the learner. Great teachers withgreat passion The teachers at the Academy of Excellence School have a passion for their learners. They are all experts in their specific subjects and are passionate about what they do. They go the extra mile for the learners, and put in a lot of extra hours to assist them. Teachers see the Gr. 12 learners as their own. We also collaborate with other institutions and various expert teachers, especially towards the preliminary and final exams. We often invite expert teachers to our school and invite neighbouring schools to participate in preparatory lessons. The learners like the interaction and learn from each other. Our learners also actively attend classes of the Monyetla Bursary Project on Saturdays at the South Campus of the University of the Free State (Vista University) where they receive tuition and are taught by some of the best teachers in the Free State. We firmly believe that the commitment from teachers, hard work by Gr. 12 learners, unconditional support by parents and last, but not the least, our combined faith in our Lord and Saviour, result in our success story. These good results would not have been possible without our belief in Jesus Christ who guided us through this year. We give Him all the glory. We would like to thank our Chief Executive Officer, Mr Hansie Engelbrecht, and his dedicated team for the continuous support in all areas of our school. We would also like to salute Mr Koos Engelbrecht, who had the vision to start the Academy of Excellence School in 1998, and is still part of our school. As our name rightly states, the Academy of Excellence School is striving to be a school of excellence. Our motto for 2020, “I will aim higher and achieve better”, serves as proof that we are going to perform even better in the new decade. Watch this space!
