The Free State Department of Education has rolled out a football development competition for high schools to get learners in the province active.

It was launched recently at a function held at the HTS Louis Botha in Bloemfontein, and is called the O.R. Tambo Football League. It is named in honour of the late ANC president and chairperson, Oliver Reginald Tambo.

The MEC of Education, Tate Makgoe, said the competition aimed to encourage the learners to participate in sports, as well as to unearth and nurture talented footballers.

The league is for u.20 boys and girls.

The teams will play home and away matches in the five Free State regions: Fezile Dabi, Lejweleputswa, Xhariep, Thabo Mofutsanyana and Motheo.

The respective regional winners will each receive a trophy and certificates.

The teams will compete in the final as a curtain-raiser of the annual Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe) Cup between Bloemfontein Celtic and Kaizer Chiefs in October.

The champions and the runner-up of the schools league will win sporting equipment worth R30 000 and R20 000, respectively.

The department has recruited five former professional players to oversee the league.
