The top-24 football schools’ teams in South Africa are gearing up to battle it out for the prestigious Nedbank Grey College Football glory. The top-seeded boys clubs will be competing from 21 to 24 September on a knockout basis to determine the champions at Grey College’s Windmill Park in Bloemfontein. The winner is guaranteed R25 000. This is the 14th edition of the competition featuring schools from as far as Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth. It has become one of South Africa’s premier schools’ competitions due to the huge interest shown by various schools across the country. It also lures talent scouts from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs that are on a mission to unearth future football stars.The Free State have 9 teams of the 24 that will compete in the tournament: Grey College, Hodisa, Brebner, Seemahale, HTS Louis Botha, Navalsig, Tsoseletso, Bloemfontein South and Vulamasango. The visiting schools are the Wynberg Boys’ High School, Westville Boys’ High School, Jeppe High School for Boys, St Andrew’s College, Grahamstown, Pinelands High School, George Campbell School of Technology, King Edward VII School, Strelitzia High School, Rondebosch Boys’ High School, Kloof High School, St David’s Marist Inanda, Victoria Park High School, Norkem Park High School, Northwood School and the Parktown Boys’ High School.In line with its tradition, the competition will also culminate in the selection of a squad of the finest players from all 24 teams. Those chosen in the squad will have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to train with top international coaches and travel abroad to compete against some of their peers at the global football talent. “The passion, camaraderie, teamwork and sportsmanship that is always demonstrated by all these young players is an inspiration to all who have the opportunity to watch these games,” said Tutu Skosana, the Nedbank’s football sponsorships manager. According to Skosana, the tournament is paving the way for the country’s best young talent to plot a course to the ultimate achievement of their dreams to play at the highest league in South Africa and possibly abroad.
