Schools ready for Danone Cup

2018-01-17 06:00

The registration for primary schools across the country for the 2018 Danone Nations Cup has been extended to the end of March this year.

This is to enable more schools to register for the prestigious primary schools competition, which offers a once-in-lifetime opportunity to compete internationally.

One of the largest soccer tournaments in the world, it is focussed on boys aged ten to 12.

This year’s edition will be the 19th edition of the football development tournament.

South Africa has been participating in this international championship since its inception and has won the world title three times: in 2003, 2007 and 2009.

The tournament is run in partnership with the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa).

It consists of games beginning at cluster level, with winning schools progressing to regional and then provincial levels, culminating in the national finals.

The national champion team which comes out on top will represent the country at the Danone Nations Cup World Finals.

Last year, over 2 700 schools registered to play in the initial rounds of the tournament, which is the most to have registered in the history of the tournament in this country.

Schools in the Free State are encouraged to register their football teams.

The Nelson Mandela Primary School and the Mofulatshepe Primary School, both from the Free State, have dominated the provincial championships.

Mofulatshepe from Smithfield have won the provincial leg from 2009 to 2011, while Nelson Mandela Primary won the 2014 and 2015 championship.

This year, the Phaphama Intermediate School from Fouriesburg will be attempting to defend their 2017 crown, which they received for winning for the first time.
