Lesley Pietersen, a Free State born centre-back footballer, will be drafted into the Free State Star Football Club for 2018.

It was announced on Wednesday (26/09) when Nedbank officially announced in which Premier Soccer League (PSL) team each of the 2018 Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search players will be drafted into.

The selected players will spend a month training with their respective teams, hoping to catch the eye of the various head coaches by putting into practice the lessons they have learned during their time in the Ke Yona Team Search camps.

This, according to Nedbank, will provide them with a potentially life-changing opportunity for them and their families as they seek to earn professional contracts and build a career in the PSL.

Congratulating the players, Tobie Badenhorst (Nedbank head: group sponsorship and cause marketing), said the life-changing prospect of being part of a PSL team is what keeps the 2018 Ke Yona team beaming with enthusiasm and hope – the same hope that 20-year old Bloemfontein Celtic Bongani Sam experienced this time last year.

“Following his selection into the Ke Yona squad, the lanky left-back was drafted into Bloemfontein Celtic for a month-long spell where he scored a first-team contract with Phunya Sele Sele,” Badenhorst said in a press statement.

“These are the kind of opportunities that Nedbank as a responsible financial institution endeavours to secure in order to uplift our players, as well as the communities from which they come.

“We believe that if even a handful of the players walk away from the programme having learnt how to manage money differently, we would have entrenched the culture of being financially savvy.

“Nedbank is proud to be able to afford an opportunity of this magnitude to various communities and will certainly continue to play this important role of making others’ dreams a reality,“ Badenhorst further said in the statement.

The determined Ke Yona Team Search players contenders took on the 2017-’18 Nedbank Cup champions – Free State Stars – on 9 September and went on to place their names in the Ke Yona history books when they scored the development sides’ second goal of the Ke Yona challenge.

The Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search talent identification initiative has proven to be a life-changing experience for a pool of professional players who have come through its ranks.

Under its umbrella of unearthed talent are players who are currently plying their trade in both the PSL and the National First Division (NFD).

The likes of Maphosa Aubrey Modiba (Supersport United), are testament to how Nedbank continues to provide a synergy between bestowing opportunities to aspiring professional footballers while affording them a platform to change their life.
