Food Coop will host a seminar focusing on the role of tuck shops in the economy on Saturday (7/12).

It will take place at the Bon Hotel in Bloemfontein.

Tuck shop owners will be addressed on the role of owners, means on how to revive and manage their businesses to boost their township’s economy’s and management thereof, to become sustainable.

“South Africa, like any other country, is faced with the challenge of creating employment opportunities for its people,” said Thembile Mohlonyane of Food Coop.

“With an unemployment rate of 29% in South Africa, there is a need to commit more resources to the small business sector and help emerging entrepreneurs to assume the role of employers.”

Mohlonyane said the seminar was influenced by findings in Olawale Fatoki’s research, “The Role of Small and Medium Enterprises in Alleviating the Development Challenges Facing South Africa: 2014”.

The one-day seminar is an ongoing drive to transform tuck shops into sustainable enterprises in the hopes of curbing the country’s high unemployment rate.
