The Bloemfontein Regional Court has imposed harsh prison terms on seven young men for gang raping a woman and for robbing her friend five years ago.

The sentences of the seven range from 15 years in prison to life imprisonment.

The seven accused are Thabiso de Wee (24), Thabo Mothibedi (24), Thabang Mojata (26), Neo Mabaqa (23), Thabang Jantjies (24), Patric Kawe (24) and Sabata May (24).

They were sentenced recently after the court found them guilty of gang raping a woman and assaulting her boyfriend and stealing his tekkies.

The incident reportedly happened in the early morning of 20 May 2011 in Peter Swart in Heidedal, Bloemfontein.

Sgt. Sinah Mpakane, Free State police spokesperson, said Mabaqa received a lesser sentence of 15 years for rape and ten years for robbery.

She said Mabaqa had already been sentenced to two life sentences for separate rape cases committed in Bloemfontein after 2011.

On that morning, the seven accused reportedly overpowered the victim, her boyfriend and a friend on their way home.

Mpakane said the seven men attacked the three friends.

They then cornered the woman and her boyfriend while their friend managed to flee.

The men assaulted and robbed the boyfriend of his tekkies.

Thereafter they dragged the woman to an open veld were they raped her, taking turns.

Mpakane said the intensive investigation had led to the arrest of the accused four days after the ordeal, leading to their sentences.
