Shearing on show

2016-03-09 06:00

REPRESENTATIVES of the Bloem Show will be doing sheep-shearing demonstrations at three local schools to educate learners about the environment and agriculture.

The show will run from 27 April to 7 May in Bloemfontein.

Bloem Show chief executive officer, Elmarie Prinsloo, says the show does not only entertain, but it provides a number of opportunities for children to learn.

During the popular shearing demonstrations, presented at the three schools in Bloemfontein, learners will get a lot of information about this industry.

“Learners will see how a sheep is sheared and how the wool is spun and then knitted to make jerseys and scarves,” said Prinsloo.

Bloem Show will conduct the demonstrations in conjunction with the National Wool Growers Association (NWGA).

The demonstrations will take place at the Rosenhof High School, the Lettie Fouché School and the Wilgehof Primary School.

During the sheep-shearing demonstrations, shearing by hand and shearing with a machine will be shown to the learners.

“The women who do the spinning and knitting do the demonstrations voluntarily.

“The learners are normally amazed by their skill and creativity,” Prinsloo added.

The demonstrations will be held on a shearing platform and will be presented by Izak Kloppers of the NWGA.
