A large South African supermarket group invites charities to apply for a festive fundraising opportunity, wrapping gifts at its stores.

The tradition of charities wrapping gifts in exchange for customer donations has become synonymous with Christmas at Shoprite and Checkers stores.

In accordance with this, the retailers encourage registered charities to apply for this annual festive season fundraiser.

Qualifying charities man the in-store gift-wrapping stations at some 577 stores across South Africa, where customers can have their gifts wrapped in exchange for a small donation.

New Beginnings, a non-profit organisation that feeds 25 000 people per week, has been a beneficiary for more than five years.

“This is a great fundraising initiative,” said Bernice Myers, marketing manager.

“People in our business know that December is the most difficult time of the year, but the funds we raise carry us through this rough time. We are always grateful.”

The applications close on Friday, 2 November. Interested charities are required to complete the online application.

A copy of a South African identity document or passport, as well as the non-profit organisation certificate, must be attached to this.

Successful applicants will be notified.
