THE struggling Chippa United on Tuesday (08/12) confirmed media reports that coach Roger Sikhakhane had been placed on “special leave”.

The newly-appointed assistant coach, Dan Malesela, who joined the club from the National First Division (NFD) high-flyers Cape Town All Stars last month, will take over interim charge of the team.

Chippa did not give specifics as to why it had sidelined Sikhakhane, though media reports have suggested that it was due to an issue with alcohol at a friendly match in Mthatha on Sunday (06/12) – something the coach vehemently denies.

“The Chippa United Football Club has placed Coach Roger Sikhakhane on special leave as of 7 December, amid allegations of misconduct at the Nelson Mandela Commemoration Cup match, which took place on 6 December in Mthatha,” the club said in a statement released on Tuesday.

“The coach has been granted until Friday (11/12), to respond to the allegations levelled against him.

“Assistant coach Dan Malesela will step in as head coach in the interim period, assisted by head of development and MultiChoice Diski head coach Floyd Mogale in preparation for the upcoming Absa Premiership encounter against Bloemfontein Celtic on 18 December.”

Sikhakhane refuted all allegations levelled against him during an interview with Robert Marawa on Metro FM on Monday (07/12) night.

“This is just a plot to get rid of me. I am a professional coach, I respect my job, and such allegations are meant to tarnish my name and that of my family,” Sikhakhane said.

“I am not going to leave Chippa United.”
