“To strengthen the party (ANC), heal the division and jealousy, including the gossip, that is used to divide us.”

That is how Mangaliso Matika, ANC Frances Baard chairperson, described Sunday’s (21/10) inter-denominational prayer service held at the Mayibuye Centre.

The event was in celebration of the birth of the late ANC stalwart Albertina Sisulu. Her daughter Lindiwe Sisulu delivered a lecture and a performance was given by renowned gospel singer Lebo Sekgobela.

Zamani Saul, ANC provincial chairperson, emphasised the value of Thuma Mina volunteerism within the party in an effort to strengthen the party to emerge with an overwhelming majority, come the 2019 elections.

No disruptions were experienced, regardless of threats having been made by various members of the Sol Plaatje community who felt that service delivery issues needed to be highlighted at a national level.

During her lecture, Sisulu mentioned that Mme Albertina had requested to be buried in her ANC Women’s League shirt as a token of commitment and dedication to her party.

Sisulu called for solidarity, social cohesion and a multi-racial society within the party, which, according to her, is the only tool that can take the party forward.

She called on fellow comrades to have each other’s back and die for each other, and be their brother’s keeper.

“Social cohesion within the ANC can only be acquired when the person sitting next to you is your best friend, your brother and a person to die for. This is what we are in the struggle and this is what is required of you,” she elaborated.

“We have to find obstacles ahead of us as one solid backlog. If you continue to be as factionalised as we have been and as we are, we are not going to achieve what we want.”

She called for an end to remarks about who belongs to who (referring to Zuma and Ramaphosa factions).

“I am nobody’s person. I am the ANC.”

She called on members to protect each other, as it was the only way they would grow.

Sisulu elaborated on how her mother had not been moved by the malicious venomous tactics that were being spat by the security machinery during the Rivonia Trial.

Sisulu emphasised the importance of growing the ANC through efforts by parents to teach their children about the ANC and what it stands for.

She said they had the tradition of sitting around the table with their mother and being taught about the ANC by their mother, who ensured that they never desert the ANC.

“Eighty percent of what we talked about at home was the ANC. That was part of our lives – that is why I already knew the ANC by the age of 17.”

She said what had driven her to join the ANC at the age of 17, was the endless promise and wait that very soon soldiers would come and free them.

“Days went by, months went by and years went by while I was waiting for the soldiers to take over the country.

“Having grown tired of waiting, I decided to go and join the Black Consciousness Movement, which she did not prevent me (to do), as she knew that I have discovered me.”
