Six young men linked to the murder of a Vanstadensrus couple, Choppie Bruwer (78) and his wife, Marian (68), on their farm, are set to reappear in the Wepener Magistrate’s Court today (11/07).

The suspects are Mzwandile Lande (31), Modiehi Makala (21), Lebohang Tladi (26), Thato Mokoena (31), Motlatsi Motsetse (20) and Tshediso Motankoba (26).

They were arrested days apart at separate places in the Kanana township, Wepener.

Motsetse and Motankoba made their first appearance on 2 July followed by Lande, Makala, Tladi and Mokoena, a day later.

Sgt Sinah Mpakane, provincial police spokesperson, said incriminating evidence linked all six suspects to the brutal killing of the Bruwer couple on 26 June.

“Two firearms, ammunition, cellphones, jewellery, a laptop and other items belonging to the deceased were found in their possession. The couple’s vehicle, a silver Chevy Spark, was also discovered,” said Mpakane.

The brutal killing of the Bruwer couple has sparked outrage.

Tommie Esterhuyse, vice-president of Free State Agriculture, has referred the elderly couple’s killing as senseless. He said 14 farm attacks in the Free State have been prevented since January.
