A 23-year-old suspect in a car hijacking case, who is an employee of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), was also linked to a case of house robbery.

The suspect was arrested just hours after he and two accomplices hijacked a 27-year-old woman at gunpoint in the Tempe Military Base in Bloemfontein.

The 23-year-old and a 40-year-old accomplice face a charge of car hijacking.

Const. Wendy Nkabi, spokesperson of the Parkweg Police Cluster, says the third suspect, apparently involved in the hijacking, is still on the run and the police are searching for him. He apparently fled on foot upon noticing the police were on their trail.

Nkabi says the three reportedly hijacked the woman inside the Tempe Military Base at about 20:30 on Monday (12/03).

According to Nkabi, the woman was on her way to a gymnasium inside Tempe when she noticed a white Toyota Etios following her. Two of the alleged hijackers reportedly followed her until she was inside the fenced area of the gymnasium where they took her car at gunpoint.

“The woman was accosted by two unknown males at gunpoint. She was ordered out of the vehicle and the armed men drove away with her silver VW Polo. The victim alerted the police and a look-out of the stolen vehicle was immediately initiated. Both vehicles, the stolen Polo and the Etios, were later spotted in town by members of the Parkweg Police Sstation who were conducting stop and search operations,” says Nkabi.

Nkabi says on screening the two hijackers, the police discovered the 23-year-old to be a member of the SANDF, and that he was also linked to a house robbery case in Bayswater in 2014. He will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court today (14/03) regarding the car hijacking case. Investigations into the house robbery case are underway.

Another case of the theft of a fire-arm, possibly linked to one of the suspects, is also under investigation, says Nkabi.
