South Africans encouraged to collect identity documents

The Department of Home Affairs encourages South Africans to collect their identity documents.

This call is in line with preparations for the election, so that all potential voters can be ensured participation.

According to the department, over 70 000 green bar-coded identity documents and 200 000 Smart ID cards are yet to be collected at various premises in the country.

The department, together with other organs of state, have embarked on a distribution programme to ensure that applicants have their IDs.

In the Free State, the provincial legislature teamed up with the department to distribute IDs in the Xhariep region, targeting Koffiefontein as the first point.

The department emphasised that the importance for citizens to have IDs goes beyond just voting in elections. It also affirms the status of citizenship and personal identity as we as be a candidate in democratic elections.

Applicants can follow up the progress of their application of IDs through sending an SMS with the word ID and their 13-digit ID number to 32551.

Alternatively, they can dial 0800-601190.
