Speak up about hate speech bill

2016-11-02 06:01

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Michael Masutha has encouraged South Africans to make their contributions to the draft Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill. He made the clarion call for public participation in the Bill during a media briefing on Monday (24/10). Interested parties and individuals have until 1 December to submit their input. According to Masutha, the bill will assist in dealing with recurring incidents of racial, xenophobic and related intolerances. “We are clear that this Bill itself may not end racism and other intolerances, but will create an instrument that will hold those guilty of committing acts accountable before the law,” he said.

The Bill aims to prosecute and sentence people who commit hate crimes and utter hate speech and to amend certain Acts of Parliament consequentially.

The Bill can be downloaded from the Department of Justice’s website: http://www.justice.gov.za.
