Lourens Scheffer (10), a Gr. 4 learner of the Staats Primary School in Kimberley, has been chosen as the October winner of the Express Northern Cape Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month competition for his sporting achievements in athletics, rugby, badminton, hockey and cricket.

Lourens plays for the Staats Primary School’s u.11A rugby, cricket and hockey teams.

He also achieved first place at his school’s athletic meeting for shot put and is a member of the De Beers Badminton Country Club in Kimberley.

In June, Lourens competed at the South African badminton championship as part of the Northern Cape badminton team, where he won a gold medal for the u.11 doubles event.

He also ranks fourth on the South African badminton u.11 rankings list.

Lourens’s motto is to never give up.

He is Express Northern Cape’s last Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month for 2017.

At the end of November, the Let’s Play Sports Star of the Year will be crowned at a private function in Kimberley.

More on the Let’s Play initiative:

Over time, SuperSport has evolved into the quintessential sporting authority in South Africa.

With such a strong sporting influence, SuperSport has been perfectly poised to harness this power and rally the public to truly make a difference in society.

SuperSport identified huge issues severely inhibiting the development of children through skills learned by playing, physical education and sport – all of which are imperative to the holistic development of young people.

It was from this insight that Let’s Play was born in November 2005 with the aim of elevating the awareness of our social situation and to introduce and encourage play, activity and sport in schools.
