The first and second place winners of the SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Year competition for Express Northern Cape have been announced.

The titles were awarded at a prestigious ceremony at the Flamingo Casino conference centre on Friday, 25 November.

The event saw guest speaker RJ Liebenberg, captain of the Griquas rugby team, motivate the young sports participants to never give up.

“Keep on moving forward and always do your best,” he said.

The annual event also welcomed the partnership with SpecSavers, who came on board by sponsoring two pairs of sunglasses, for the first and the second place winners.

The first place was scooped by Mariska van Tonder, who excels in wrestling.

Mariska started her wrestling career in 2008. She became a member of the Indovu Amateur Wrestling Club in Kimberley and a member of the Northern Cape Wrestling Association.

Her outstanding performance in achieving gold medals in wrestling at regional and national level is the reason why she was chosen as the overall winner.

The other point highlighted was that she has performed well in a male-dominated sport, which provides a good example for the argument that there is no longer male-dominated sports.

Her motto is: “Believe in, and put all your trust in God, and no one can defeat you with Him by your side”.

The second place went to Hardus van der Merwe, who was chosen for his versatility in various sporting codes.

He has reached a lot of achievements in regional competitions, leading to national level.

He participates in cross-country, biathlon, long jump and rugby.

His motto is: “Hard work will beat talent, if talent doesn’t work hard.”
