The Bethulie Regional Court has sentenced Mbuyiselo Marolloane (25) to a lengthy prison term after finding him guilty of murdering a teenage girl last year.

The court sentenced the accused on Wednesday (28/11).

The accused was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for murdering the victim, Refilwe Marite (16), at the Driefontein Farm near Bethulie. Marolloane had fatally stabbed the deceased in the neck with a knife.

Sgt Yanga Ngcukana, police spokesperson for the region, said the victim had died on the scene following the stabbing.

He said Marolloane had attacked the deceased after the two had reportedly had a bitter argument over alcohol. Both the deceased and victim had been drinking.

Ngcukana said both had been part of a group of farm workers who were drinking alcohol.

“The police found the murder weapon used, and it was confiscated,” he said.

Ngcukana said evidence presented by eyewitnesses in court during the trial was credible.

“The eyewitnesses managed to convince the court that the accused was guilty, and he was sentenced as such.”
