Star leaves a legacy

Mthetheleli “Scara” Qhinga made his debut at Dalton Brothers FC at a tender age, while the club was still campaigning in the Promotional Soccer League.

He is well respected by the Galeshewe community at large after the successful formation of the club, which featured different sporting codes, in 1950.

Qhinga’s football talent had been honed by Mangaung United and discovered by Dalton Brothers FC.

He played in all the promotional leagues, including the Stylo League and the Airborn League, under the leadership of Bethuel “Mr Constitution” Morolo, the then president of the South African Bantu Football Association.

He later went into full professional football under the auspices of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL), which included 12 clubs from all over South Africa.

According to Qhinga, one of the low points in his football career was when they lost 0 – 11 to Cape town Phomolong in the Airborn League. One of the highlights was when they beat Kaizer Chiefs 2 – 1 in a deciding match for the league honours, which made Orlando Pirates win the league in 1971.

Dalton Brothers FC was demoted from the NPSL and Qhinga joined Amazulu Royals to remain in the Elite League.

After his retirement, he formed the Tlhageng Masters and Club Vuka Pool Club based in Kimberley.

  • Qhinga was among eight legends who were awarded by the Sol Plaatje Masters League in collaboration with the provincial Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, and the Francis Baard District Municipality on 14 July at the Mayibuye Centre.
