Stars, Celtic face off

2016-09-14 06:00

BETHLEHEM. Z Wednesday’s (14/09) Free State derby clash between Free State Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic promises to produce fireworks as both teams will be fighting for their first win of the 2016-’17 season, following a disappointing start.

The fight for the prized three points will be staged at the Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem. Kickoff is at 19:30.

Both teams come into this encounter wounded, after suffering defeat in the season openers against Chippa United and Maritzburg United respectively.

Ea Lla Koto was beaten by 1-2 by Chippa at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, while Phunya Sele Sele lost by 0-1 to Maritzburg on their home turf in Bloemfontein.

The last time these two teams faced each other (on 13 March) the Bethlehem-based outfit won by 2-1 in Bloemfontein.

Sello Japhta, who is now with Orlando Pirates, scored both goals for Stars, while the Burundian Fiston Abdul Razak scored the only goal for Celtic from a penalty spot.

Denis Lavagne’s troops have proven to be a hoodoo team to their arch-rivals, as they have managed to win four games in their last five clashes, with Celtic winning one.

The players and coaches of the teams know that this derby clash is not only about results, but it also goes with the provincial bragging rights. The ability of players to score goals will be key in searching for three points.

However, statistics predict that a battle between the two teams is capable of producing goals. They have not played to a goalless draw in an official game since 2000.
