News about the passing of struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has hit the country hard. She died on Monday afternoon (02/04) after a short illness.

Madikizela-Mandela, who passed away in hospital at the age of 81, continues to be lauded as one of the fiercest icons in the struggle against apartheid since the years of her marriage to late former president Nelson Mandela, who died five years ago.

She is thus also hailed as a co-liberator of South Africa and the mother of the nation, as he was the father of the nation.

Her death was announced on Monday by the Presidency.

President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed her as a heroine of the struggle and said she had lived a rich and remarkable life.
