AN exhilarating day of soccer enthralled the community of Sasolburg as the grand finale of the Sasol League National Championships on Sunday (13/12) saw the Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies lift the trophy.

Gauteng’s Masandawana beat the Cape Town Roses of the Western Cape by 5-0 in a one-sided final played under hot weather conditions.

Dr Danny Jordaan, South African Football Association (Safa) president, Tokyo Sexwale, Fifa presidential candidate, and Brutus Mahlaku, executive mayor of the Metsimaholo Local Municipality, were some of the dignitaries at the event.

Sundowns scored their first two goals through Andisiwe Mgcoyi and Agnes Nkosi, before Zanele Nhlapo converted a penalty, which was awarded after a hand ball to give Masandawana a 3-0 lead at the half-time break. The tournament’s top goal scorer, Mgcoyi, made it 4-0 in the second stanza, before Missy Sethunya scored the fifth goal in the 89th minute.

In the third and fourth-place play-offs, Limpopo’s Kantatla Ladies FC beat Durban Ladies 4-1 on penalties after the match had ended on 1-1.
