A suspected habitual burglar was caught red-handed before taking off with the loot, which includes a cellphone, clothes and a plasma television, at a Bloemfontein block of flats.

The burglar broke into one of the apartments on the corner of Kellner and Aliwal Street in broad daylight after finding his way through a security gate on Wednesday (27/09).

He apparently caused irreparable damage to the wooden door of the apartment after managing to open the steel security gate without any difficulty.

The male occupant stated that he had ensured that both the security gate and the main wooden door had been properly locked before leaving the apartment.

He said he had been shocked to find both doors wide open and the suspect busy packing items in an orange bag.

The suspect found his match in the occupant.

The suspect was overpowered and disarmed and apparently lost grip of his unidentified weapon, which he had used trying to scare off the occupant during a gruelling self-defence battle in the corridor of the block of flats.

Although the suspect managed to break free momentarily, he proved unable to outrun the super-fit occupant.

The occupant caught the suspect within 150 m from the block of flats. The suspect was powerless after he had run out of steam during his failed attempt to flee.

The suspect was handed over to the police.
