Suspect on trial

A group of 30 alleged gang members who were arrested regarding a string of brutal killings are set to go on trial in the Bloemfontein High Court. The trial is scheduled to start early in February.

Col. Thandi Mbambo, Free State police spokesperson, says that 114 alleged gang members were apprehended during a crackdown in Mangaung for several violent gang-related crimes.

She says this saw the arrest of a young man who, according to the police, is one of the most wanted gang leaders.

Mbambo says the alleged gang leader, Solomon Teboho Ntseno (22), known as Dimeche, was arrested earlier this month at his hideout in Botshabelo, G Section.

She says the alleged gang leader appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on 9 and 12 January, adding that he would be among the group due to stand trial for murder in the Bloemfontein High Court.

“Crime intelligence-led information resulted in the arrest of Ntseno by the provincial task team,” says Mbambo.

“He appeared in court for other murder cases. He is linked to five gang-related murders.

“These include the case of three men who were killed and whose bodies were found near a shopping mall in Bloemfontein.”

Mbambo says Ntseno, who resides in Phase 4, Bloemfontein, has been sought by the police since February 2017 for several gang-related murders.

She says the alleged gang leader will join his counterparts in the Bloemfontein High Court when the trial begins next month.
