Suspect sentenced to life in jail

A 22-year-old man who thought he could get away with raping a 16-year-old teenager twice has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court sentenced the accused on 27 March after finding him guilty of raping the victim on two separate occasions.

Const. Peter Kareli, Free State police spokesperson, said the hard sentencing was a result of in-depth investigation that revealed it was the second time that the accused raped the teenager early in May 2015. The second rape incident reportedly happened at a family’s house in Caleb Motshabi settlement, Bloemfontein.

Kareli said findings revealed the accused had also raped the victim a while back. He said that at the time of the first rape incident, the accused was still underaged.

Kareli said during the trial the court heard that the accused had threatened the victim and instructed her not to tell anybody. “The victim kept quiet until two weeks later, when she informed one of her family members. The suspect was arrested the following day at his family’s house. With tangible evidence, the suspect was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape,” said Kareli.
